Education & Training Programs

The UC San Diego Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology and Shiley Eye Institute offers a wide range of training opportunities to help undergraduates, post-baccalaureate students, medical students, residents, and fellows in achieving their career goals as well as provide a more in depth understanding of vision science and clinical ophthalmology.

We offer unparalleled services for health professionals – convenient patient referrals and state-of-the art education and training, as well as access to clinical trials and medical resources.

Continuing Medical Education

At the Shiley Eye Institute, we encourage our health care professionals to pursue continuing education and professional development opportunities whenever possible. We believe that learning should be a lifelong endeavor.

Residency

The UCSD Shiley Eye Institute Ophthalmology Residency Program emphasizes excellence, ethics, and humanity. We train residents to be exceptional ophthalmologists who have the tools to succeed in all aspects of Ophthalmology, whether they choose academics, research, or the private sector.

Fellowships

The UCSD Department of Ophthalmology strives to obtain the highest caliber and most suitable applicants to become ophthalmology fellows. With 8 different fellowships to choose from, San Diego is a great place to train.

Medical Students

The UCSD Department of Ophthalmology offers a month-long elective to fourth-year UCSD medical students and a two-week surgical elective to third-year UCSD medical students.

Research Internship Programs

These internship programs provide faculty mentorship, career development, hands-on research experience, networking opportunities, and a wide range of instructional courses.

  • Insurance information and approval authorization, fax to (858) 822-2511 prior to the appointment.
  • Please fax any medical information records necessary to the patient's diagnosis to (858) 732-0921 (Shiley Eye Institute medical records). Then, have the patient call (858) 534-6290 to make an appointment with the doctor you are referring.
