Everything You Need to Know About

Preparing for Surgery

A preoperative examination is required for all patients undergoing surgery.  Please bring the following with you when you come to the Shiley Eye Institute:

  • A list of your current medications and dosages.
  • Past medical information from referring doctor or previous physician.
  • Any prior EKG tests, if available.
  • The name, address and telephone number of your primary care physician and cardiologist, if applicable.
  • Your insurance information card and Medicare card (if applicable).
  • A picture ID (drivers license etc.).

During your preoperative appointment, our nurse practioner will review the medications that you can safely take prior to surgery.  Please do not make any changes to your current medications until advised by your physician or nurse practioner.

New Surgery Patient Drop Off Instructions

Shiley Eye Institute RenovationTo accommodate increased patient volume and provide the best care to our community, the Shiley Eye Institute Renovation project will convert the vacated second floor from research and office space into clinical space.

When: Make-ready construction efforts are targeted to begin in mid- to late July.

Where: Shiley Eye Institute, east and west ends of building and in landscape area.

Impact: Eye surgery patient drop-off area will be relocated to the first floor of the Athena Parking Structure and the pick-up area will be relocated to Medical Center Drive, directly south of Shiley.

For the safety of all, additional vehicle yield signage will be added to the lighted pedestrian crosswalk between Athena and the Shiley Eye Institute.

The northeast entrance/exit of Shiley Eye Institute will be unavailable during this construction project.

We understand that our patients will be impacted by this work and appreciate your patience and understanding as UCSD Health and the Shiley Eye Institute expand to serve our patients and the community.

Patient Testimonials

"I have nothing but good things to say about Shiley. I have been a patient there for more than 25yrs. I have had so many complications with my vision, and have seen various specialists at Shiley.. The doctors there are top notch, and have saved my eyesight on several occasions with emergency situations. Thank goodness We have Shiley here in San Diego."

Visitor

"I am extremely impressed with the Coronavirus preventative measures they have in place. I had some anxiety when I needed to go there for an appointment after the precautions went into effect. They have social distancing inside and outside the building. Every person wears a mask. Hand sanitizer is at the entrance and no one is allowed in until 12 questions are answered and your temperature is taken."
