Sasan Moghimi

Sasan Moghimi, MD, is clinician-scientist working at UC San Diego Shiley Eye Institute and Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology, as Professor of Ophthalmology. Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, he was a professor and vice chair at Farabi Eye Hospital at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Dr. Moghimi completed fellowships in glaucoma at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and UC San Francisco School of Medicine. He completed residency training in ophthalmology and earned his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Dr. Moghimi has an active clinical practice managing adult glaucoma patients and complex cataract surgeries. His clinical focus is glaucoma including angle closure glaucoma. He also runs myopia and glaucoma clinic with complex diagnostic and management cases.

Dr. Moghimi’s research focuses on functional and structural measurements for optimizing diagnosis of glaucoma or its progression with a focus in advanced glaucoma, use of artificial intelligence approaches in glaucoma diagnostics including OCTA, and study of angle closure disease. He has been the recipient of many awards, most recently including NIH R01 and the University of California Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program awards.

Dr. Moghimi is a clinician-scientist who continues to teach and publish extensively. He has several educational awards including outstanding Clinical Teaching Award.  He has co-authored over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters related to glaucoma and vision science. He is an editorial board member of many ophthalmology journals including Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and International Glaucoma Review.
